Project Abstract:

GCBO has teamed up with American Bird Conservancy to increase protection and public awareness of beach nesting bird populations that were affected by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. While this project focuses on nesting Black Skimmers and Least Terns - some of the most detrimentally impacted bird species, many other colonial nesting waterbirds will benefit from the conservation measures being taken. With funding from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation and leadership by ABC Coordinator Kacy Ray, actions include posting educational signage at nesting islands as shown above, conducting boater awareness surveys, distributing a Fisherman's and Boater's Bird Guide to the breeding birds of the Texas Coast, and a Public Service Announcement to be aired in several major markets on the Gulf coast. GCBO's Dr. Susan Heath will concentrate her efforts on the upper portion of the Texas coast and will be posting progress about the project on our monthly e-news.
