What is the Roughwings Tournament?
This birdwatching tournament is targeted to young people with in interest in science and the outdoors. They will have a chance to learn about birds, bird habitat and the importance of conservation. Teachers are invited to introduce young people to the wonderful world of birding in this unique event.
How does it work?
The Roughwings tournament has been specifically designed to accommodate the schedules of school-age children. Groups of 3-5 young people, plus any additional parents, teachers or chaperones, will have the chance to bird for a total of 8 hours in any of the three geographical sections of the coast as designated by the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Prizes will be awarded to the team that records the most species of birds. This is a fun and friendly competition. Winners and prizes will be announced at the Awards Brunch. All Roughwings participants and chaperones are invited.
Who can participate?
Roughwings birding is open to anyone 13 years of age or younger. We encourage teachers, parents, local bird clubs, community leaders and sponsors to find young people who are interested in birding or learning to bird. Our goal is to introduce the ideas of conservation, responsible use of natural resources and stewardship to these young people.
