September is here and that means so are the raptors! Counts started out a bit slow due to the weather, but by the 8th of this month there was a big influx of species. The highest numbers we have seen so far have been Broad-Winged Hawks reaching close to the 800s and Mississippi Kites skyrocketing to close to 1000 individuals. Not only raptors are flying high; we have seen thousands of Ibis and Anhinga over these past weeks. We have even seen what appeared to be a 10ft alligator lurking by the breakwater! The activity continues to pick up at Smith Point and everyday is a surprise, so make sure you stop on by and see these amazing animals. As always, a huge thank you to our volunteers who spend hours on end collecting this vital data!
