Tad reports 6,088 migrating raptors today.

Broad-winged Hawk 4411
Red-tailed Hawk 2
Sharp-shinned Hawk 318
Cooper’s Hawk 14
Mississippi Kite 1325
American Kestrel 4
Peregrine Falcon 3
Merlin 1
Osprey 4
Northern Harrier 6

Birds, birds, birds. It was difficult to count today because of the constant stream of birds moving back and forth. The big hour was between 2 and 3 when almost 4,000 birds came through. The sky was constantly filled with Sharp-shinned Hawks so passerines kept their heads down. There was a Western/Couch’s Kingbird on the lines between town and the tower entry road in the afternoon. There were also close to 500 American White Pelicans seen during the day with about 50 sitting on the water next to the tower for a while in the morning.

The Smith Point Hawk Watch is funded entirely through donations and grants. We have received a number of donations! Thank you! We still need additional funding however. If you would like to make a contribution, you can do so on our website. We appreciate the support very much!
